Not all Heroes wear capes, some wear scrubs
Today is International Superhero Day, our Superheroes are the NHS, who are yours? The NHS has been around since 1948! In Britain, there is a state-funded system called the NHS (national health service), which guarantees care for all. That means everything from ambulance rides, to emergency room visits, to long hospital stays, complex surgery, chemotherapy etc, are all free. They're paid for with payroll taxes.
Bedford Hospital opened back in 1803, by the Duke of Bedford, Lord John Russell, the Brewers son and Samuel Whitbread. Major recent developments have included the Cygnet wing, which provides paediatric, maternity and Gynaecology, and which was opened by the Queen back in 1996.
Every year the NHS go above and beyond for us all. Working long hours, at times having no breaks. Everyday we should appreciate and be grateful to all of our NHS workers, not just today.
Over the past year we have had some NHS doctors and nurses come and stay with us, during everything going on with COVID-19. It is rewarding being able to give back and support the community. Use today to shoutout your NHS hero!
